ACT ONE: SCENE TWO
(Soala’s house in Festac, Lagos)
She is dressed in a short skirt and top.
SOALA: (soliloquizing). University
of Lagos, here I come. I will paint the whole campus blue and the whole world
would be inside out. (Soala’s mother
walks in)
SOALA’S MOTHER: My daughter!
SOALA: Hi, mummy!
SOALA’S MOTHER: I can see you are
really happy to leave me here alone for your school.
SOALA:No, mummy. I am not happy to
leave you. Just that the joy of attending a university has over shadowed me.
SOALA’S MOTHER:I’m only kidding, my daughter.
Please make sure you don’t leave any thing behind.
SOALA: I will.
SOALA’S MOTHER: Please be very careful.
You know you are the only one left to me. Your father had been killed and your
only brother is nowhere to be found. You are my only hope.
SOALA: Mummy, there won’t be any
problem. You know your daughter. The world would have to be at my feet. I’m
brilliant and beautiful. I will certainly make you proud. And there won’t be
any problem.
SOALA’S MOTHER: One more thing,
my daughter.
SOALA:What is it, mama?
SOALA’S MOTHER: A treasure does
not last longer in the hand of a pauper because he will certainly not know its
value. You are a treasure; do not be so silly to date a poor man. Poverty is a
disease. A contagious disease can be spread from one person to another. You know
this house is the only thing left from your father’s possessions. Your father was
once a rich man but was killed by a poor man who was desperate to be rich. He
duped your father.
SOALA: I can never marry a poor
man. So, you don’t have to worry a bit.
SOALA’S MOTHER:Thank you, my
daughter. (She hogged her).
SOALA:I’ll miss you a lot.
SOALA’S MOTHER:Mummy’s pet!
Quickly pack your luggage and let me accompany you to the school.
SOALA:Ok, mum
ACT ONE: SCENE THREE
(UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS)
SOALA and her mother drop from a
taxi. She carries her load while her mother follows her. They move towards the
school administrator’s office. Students are moving to and fro, some exchanging
pleasantry while there are several new comers who look strange. On getting to
the administrator’s office entrance, SOALA meet her old time friend coming out
from the administration’s office with some files on her hand. They are
surprised to see each other.
SOALA: Hey, Julienah! (She
shouted)
JULIENAH: SOALA, my very good
friend, how are you?
SOALA:I’m fine. It’s nice to see
you again.
JULIENAH: I just gained an
admission here. I’m just coming from the administrator’s office.
SOALA’S MOTHER:Who is she?
SOALA: Oh mum, pardon me for being
naughty. This is my very good friend, Julie. We attended the same secondary
school.
JULIANAH: Good afternoon ma
SOALA’S MOTHER: Good afternoon my
daughter, how are you and your parents?
JULIANAH: Fine ma
SOALA’S MOTHER: I can see you
guys are fond of each other
SOALA: Yes, mum. Julie is really
a nice girl o; she is the last child of chief Afolabi……. (Julienah cuts in)
JULIENAH: Don’t tell me you have
brought your mummy to the school in order to pay for your clearance and tuition.
SOALA: Yes, I’m mummy’s pet, you
know!
JULIENAH: Common girl, you are no
longer a kid. Though, you haven’t changed really.
SOALA: Really? (They both laughed)
I can’t change. I am I, me and myself. I can’t be you, they or anybody else!
SOALA’S MUM: Girls, I think I
will have to excuse you at this juncture. Kindly take care of your self. (She
renders something). That reminds me please come on time so I can give you money
to pay for your hostel.
JULIENAH: Mum, I don’t think that
one will be necessary. SOALA will be staying with me in my own hostel. I think
it is big enough to contain us and we can be able to get more familiar with
ourselves after a long time of not seeing each other.
SOALA: Mum, I think it is a good
idea. You know I don’t like staying alone.
SOALA’S MOTHER: OK, you guys
should just take care of yourselves. Bye! (She leaves and waves her hand to
them.)
SOALA: Bye, mum!
JULIENAH: Mummy’s pet! Let me
take you to the administrator’s office.
